Staying in university dorms during the summer in London is slightly more expensive than hostels, but if you value privacy and safety, can be a good option: The best things in London are super cheap or free. I recommend: * The Tate Modern * The ICA * London walks (walks.com) * Going to Hyde Park, renting one of the blue Barclay’s bikes, and riding around (and having a picnic!) * Speaker’s Corner in Hyde Park on a Sunday * The National Portrait Gallery (will give you a great insight into British culture and history) * The Wellcome Trust Museum * The British Library * The Imperial War Museum * The Victoria & Albert Museum * The Natural History Museum * The Museum of London * The mediatheque at the British Film Institute (you can watch anything in their archives for up to 2 hours free) * The Grant Museum of Zoology (check out Jeremy Bentham’s autoicon in the main UCL building while you’re at it, and you may like to go to a free and fascinating UCL lunch hour lecture: * The Horniman Museum * Sitting in the public gallery and watching part of a trial at the Old Bailey (Central Criminal Court) just off Fleet Street – a spectacle that is uniquely British. Be aware you can’t take phones or bags in. St. Paul’s Cathedral is just up the street, too. * Pollock’s Toy Store Museum * The Museum of Brands, Advertising and Packaging (really fascinating) * Ragged School Museum * The Prince Charles Cinema * Sir John Soame’s Museum In terms of eating, don’t eat in touristy areas/tourist traps! Seek out some cheap but awesome places: * Tayyab’s * Mohsen * Mangal in Arcola Street * Borough Market * Lantana * Maoz Falafel * A bit of old school Soho – Lorelei * The Seashell fish and chips takeaway in Lisson Grove * The Stockpot (not the fanciest or best food, but so dependable and filling and amazingly cheap always – * Princi * Albion
I currently earn very little doing the job I have always wanted to do. Some of my friends who graduated with me last year are earning twice as much as me, and within a year will probably be earning around three times as much. I don’t know if they’re happy, but I know this – I definitely am. I’m living quite comfortably, and every day I wake up and feel great. If you like architecture, go and fucking do it. Seriously. You’ll wake up wanting to go to lectures, drawing cool shit that I don’t understand but apparently… does… stuff. My dad’s best friend is an architect, and he also does work on old building restoration. Last week he was called to London and went up to inspect the roof of St. Paul’s Cathedral and a bunch of other cool places. Do what you like! Seriously.
